I’m proud to share with you one of my recent projects, a documentary film called “The Lightkeepers”. It was part of the Video & Storytelling LAB, a workshop organized by Karpos and supported by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Greece. The workshop aimed to familiarize people from different social and cultural backgrounds with the film process and personal expression through images and sounds.
The workshop was divided into 10 three-hour sessions and concluded in March 2023. During these hours, we learned the principles of storytelling and how to operate film equipment to eventually create our own videos. The subjects of our films varied as well as our approach, from documentaries to a more artistic and narrative approach to the subjects. We chose the subjects of our films by ourselves and with the help of Karpos’ instructors we developed our script and did the final editing.
My film, “The Lightkeepers”, is a group film directing project that I worked on with Mustafa Noah and Elli Xypolitaki. We wanted to explore how a school in Athens, that works on the weekends, helps refugee children that have fled the war in Ukraine. How does it help ease children’s painful memories and experiences from the war? How does it offer them hope and a sense of belonging?

Our film was presented at the “Art & Inclusion” event on May 10 in Romantso, Athens, along with the other films produced by the workshop participants. The event was a great opportunity to showcase our work and to discuss how art can promote inclusion, social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. The attendance and participation of the people was great and moving for all of us. The next screenings of our film will be announced soon.
I’m very grateful for the experience of being part of the Video & Storytelling LAB and for the chance to meet and collaborate with amazing people. I learned a lot from the workshop, not only about filmmaking, but also about myself and the world around me. I hope you enjoy watching our film and I look forward to hearing your feedback.
